Designing a Shedding Game

  • Drawing on some sort of travel experience, create a competitive 4-player game in which the goal is for a player to get rid of all their cards.
  • Experience Goals: Reduce the role of luck and design for one of Bartle's 4 Player Types.

To Construct the Game, You Will....

  • Make and submit a deck of custom cards (color + inked or printed)
    • all cards also need to be listed in a spreadsheet
  • Print instructions based on the template to package with your cards

Each team member will also be responsible for completing a self- and peer-evaluation.

Helpful Design Questions:

  • What cards do players start with? Are they random?
  • If there’s a draw pile, what types of cards are in it?
  • Do players all share the same role?
  • What's on the specialty cards?
  • Can players trade or exchange cards?
  • What happens when you discard? Where do discard cards go and why?
  • Is there an objective to satisfy along the way to discarding all cards?

Getting Started

Due Tuesday Oct 3

  1. In TEAMS, each member of the group is responsible for suggesting three travel-related themes that might work for the game.
  2. As a group, pick FIVE of these and elaborate on them with a two sentence description each for what the game might be about.

In-Class Tuesday:

  1. Play the simple shedding game Bartok. (It's like royalty-free Uno.)
  2. Consider how the themes of the five ideas the group came up with might map to actions in a Bartok-like game.
    1. What would be some speciality cards?
    2. Are there objectives in addition to getting rid of all your cards?
  3. Try playing through some of these ideas using a regular deck of cards and your IDEAPAK material
